My God! My God! Why Did You Leave Me?!

I see a man upon a cross, my stomach churns in agony.  Who is this man?  What did he do?  Why would God allow him to endure this pain?

I ask among the crowd, I see hate in their faces.  Why do these people hate this man so much?  They yell insults and spit upon his face.  What he did must be awful, he must be a horrible man.

I see a crown of thorns upon his head, I see a sign nailed to the cross.  “King of the Jews.”  I become desperate, my questions turn to pleas.

I see a man upon a cross, he cries out in agony, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (Which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”)

He had been beaten beyond recognition, nails pierced his hands and feet, he hung fighting for his last torturing breath, and yet all his pain was in the separation.  Why?!  Why would his God forsake him?  What reason could he have?  When at his hour of suffering, why would his God leave him?

And then I knew the answer.  ME!  My God!  Why would you forsake him?  FOR ME!  Why would you let him bear this cross?  FOR ME!  Why would you let this perfect man live the most painful life ever endured?  FOR ME!  Why would you leave him when you have been with him for all of eternity past?  FOR ME!

Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?  FOR ME!

  2. And we are SOOOOOOO unworthy. How can I say thanks for all He has done for me? things so undeserved, yet He gave to prove His love for me…..from the song “My Tribute.” Don’t know who wrote it or first recorded it.

  3. Interesting yes we do benefit from his death and Yes Christ redeemed us however we have to recognise that this also is a response to the first section of the Lords Prayer – let your name be sanctified.

    The Devil challenged the loyalty of all human creatures – he wanted God to remove his protective hedge from them and expose everyone to the full force of his crafty acts. Jesus is the only one who could answer that challenge.

    So following his words (Matthew 27:46) 46 About the ninth hour, Jesus called out with a loud voice, saying: “Eʹli, Eʹli, laʹma sa·bach·thaʹni?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

    (Luke 23:46) 46 And Jesus called out with a loud voice and said: “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” After he said this, he expired.

    (John 19:30) . . .Jesus said: “It has been accomplished!” and bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.

    The Apostle John leaves us in no doubt what Jesus had expressed when he recorded:
    (John 17:4) 4 I have glorified you on the earth, having finished the work you have given me to do. . .

    So we return to the theme of Jesus ministry the Kingdom and from that we benefit as Christ remains our redeemer

    So he knew why God had left him, it was a question of answering the biggest question – would anyone serve God because they wanted to and out of love. Once Jesus had answered that everything else could be put right.

    As Paul says Sin entered through one man and life comes through the second Adam Jesus Christ.

    Great thought and really made me think about why we are assured that there is a real hope for all humans if they return to our heavenly father. – Sorry this was so long it just got me thinking

  5. Beautiful. I have yet read a literary work about Jesus’s suffering that I didn’t find inspiringly beautiful. This is now one of my favorites. I especially love the ending “eli, eli, lama sabachthani FOR ME”
