There is no greater agony than having your own child turn against you. There are so many qualities that I admire about King David! Faith and courage to stand before a giant, compassion on King Saul after the king tried to kill him, a great musician, beautiful writer of the Psalms, a lover…the list goes on and on, what an amazing man and what an exciting life!
But could “incredible father” be added to the list? Perhaps it could. There are many children that chose the wrong road even when excellence was modeled to them. I don’t know.
But David! The man we teach in Sunday School, the handsome warrior in the Bible, what a tragedy, what a broken heart that I do not envy! His own son, Absalom, turned on him and tried to kill him.
Christians are not free of hurt. We are not promised a life of luxury. Why do so many turn away from God when life gets hard? Why does the world observe suffering and conclude, “There is no God.” David, the man of many sorrows proclaimed, “I call out to the Lord and he answers me.”
More than imitating the David standing before Goliath or the king of prosperity, I want to remember and imitate the David that knew who God was and called out to him, even during overwhelming tragedy.
“The Lord sustains me.”
Both he and Solomon lived with family betrayal, something we never teach in Sunday School! As children gw older we need to help them sell the agonies our “heroes” of faith went through!

All I ever asked of God was to protect the ones I love.
I would have to see their suffering and their death and love it.
I conclude that nothing is mine.
Even the consequences of my choice between good or evil, the apparent extent of free will (except to love or curse God), can not be predicted.
Who needs us?

Oh, amen! Great post. So many people in the world today confront those very same challenges, kids who have turned against them, family estrangement, hardships. Those are the times we need to run towards God, not away from Him.

may we all have the grace to acknowledge that God is still fighting for us, providing for us and loving us even in the middle of adversity

Suffering and death are designed to turn you to God? “Be happy, love death”? What “free will” can accept that? Wisdom appears to be capitulation… Oh, now I get it!

King David is one of the more memorable figures from the Bible. His personality in the stories spoke more than his actions.
There is a beauty to the Psalms.

The lie of the prosperity gospel has taken over and the lack of teaching that we live in a fallen world. The message has strayed from the Truth.

I was so surprised to find this today. Yesterday, I was working on a post about David and his writing of the Psalms first coming from a place of suffering and despair. Even through his sorrow and fear, because of his focus on gratitude, the Psalms transformed into the uplifting poetic praise book we know it to be.
Your post today is speaking to my heart. God bless you.

Very good blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like
Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out
there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!
